Rev. Rodney E. Bitely
Pastor Bitely was Called to St. Paul as its 4th Pastor in July 1999. A second career Pastor, he worked for several years in Baltimore, MD, as a Project Manager in Banking before enrolling at the Seminary. Under his Pastoral care, God has blessed St. Paul to relocate from Sandston and establish their ministry here in Mechanicsville. Pastor Bitely especially enjoys oppportunities for preaching and teaching God's Word, and you will find those elements to be key aspects of the ministry at St. Paul. Pastor is a graduate of Concordia College, Ann Arbor, MI--where he met his wife Carol--and of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO. Pastor and Carol have 2 grown children.
Though she has only held the positon of Church Secretary for a short time, Meggie has been a part of St. Paul's congregation for many years. Her great-grandparents were some of the first members of St. Paul's original congregation in Sandston. In addition to serving as our Church Secretary, Meggie also edits our monthly newlsetter, updates the Church website, teaches one of our Sunday School classes, and helps plan Youth Activites. In the future, she plans to attend the University of Mary Washington to study French and become a teacher.
Mrs. Nancy Burks is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Sacred Music and Organ. She and her husband, Louis, are great friends here at St. Paul. While she has been with us several years, she has served elsewhere as a church organist for 46, in additon to serving as an organist/choir director for 36 years. Outside of her organist position, she used to work as a supervisor in Customer Service at A.H. Robins Company. She is a graduate of Smithdeal-Massey Business College with a Secretarial Certificate, and a graduate of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College with a Certificate in Business Credit and Collections.
Bill was born in Parkersburg, WV. The family moved to Cuyahoga Falls, OH in 1956 where he became the first Eagle scout in the troop sponsored by Redeemer Lutheran Church. Bill also became involved in the band program during Jr. and Sr. High School. Bill has two degrees in Music and served in two Army bands, one in Chicago and one in Kaiserslautern, Germany, playing trombone and euphonium. As a band and orchestra director in Ohio, he taught in Dayton Public Schools and later in the Trotwood-Madison City Schools. In 1990 Bill entered the computer business in Technical Support.Bill served as Music Assistant at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Kettering, OH for 15 years. In addition to vocal choir, he directed a brass ensemble, church band, folk ensemble, and handbell choir. In Birmingham, AL, he directed vocal and handbell choirs at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, and currently directs the vocal choir here at St. Paul. He as 60 published music compositions and arrangements for handbells, band, string orchestra and brass instruments.
Guest Organist and Pianist
Lina, an only child, was born and raised in Lima, OH. She was active in the school band program playing flute and piccolo while singing in or accompanying school choirs. She played organ at St. Luke Lutheran Church the summer before heading to Kent State University as a Flute Major. She met Bill there and they were married the next Christmas. Lina followed Bill's Army tour, experiencing life in Chicago and Germany, where they lived in a 200 year old house in the small village of Kindsbach. Bill and Lina spent 22 years in Kettering raising a family, including hosting 2 foreign exchange students. Lina sang in the church choir, played handbells and flute--occasionally filling in on piano and organ. During this time, Lina completed a degree in Computer Science and worked for NCR Corp. Two companies later, after Bill came to work with Lina at Banktec, that company moved to Birmingham, AL, where they lived for 17 years. They both worked in tech support until retiring, then moving to Mechanicsville in 2014. Their son is a member of the Air Force Band and lives in Alexandria. Aaron and Stacie have two children, Weston and Fiona. Their daughter Alison lives north of Atlanta with her husband Dave and their newest addition to the family, their son Luke.
